The Butler Police Department provides a professional level of service to the community while practicing a community-oriented policing philosophy. We are committed to creating and maintaining active community partnerships and assisting citizens in identifying and solving problems in the community. We will work with the community to improve the quality of lives in our neighborhoods and strategically utilize the assets we have available to us to help reduce crime and make our neighborhoods safer and more enjoyable. Chief's Page

Mark Heffelfinger is a 1974 Eastside High School graduate and is a graduate of the Northwestern University Police Staff and Command School. He began his Law Enforcement career in 1979 when he joined the DeKalb County Sheriff's Dept. where he worked until 1984 when he joined the Butler Policeman as a patrolman.

Assistant Chief Matthew J. Traster is a graduate of Prairie Heights High School and moved to DeKalb County in 1997.

Our police reserves are fully trained, sworn members of the department who supplement the work of our full-time officers, helping with both patrol and administrative duties.

The Butler Police Department welcomes the opportunity to work with today's youth, particularly underprivileged children who may not have the same opportunities as others their age. Shop with a Cop is one way we reach out to these children and their families.

Background Checks
Residents requesting a background check may come to the Butler Police Department to complete the necessary forms. Please allow at least five working days for this to be completed. There is a $5 charge for background checks.

Identity Theft Victim Packet

This packet should be completed once you have contacted Butler Police Department and obtained a police report number related to your identity theft case. 

Fingerprinting For State Or Local Jobs
The Butler Police Department provides employment fingerprinting for a $15 fee.

Vehicle Title Checks
The Butler Police Department provides vehicle title checks. Vehicles within the city limits may be checked at the Police Department or their location. Vehicles outside the city limits must either be brought to the Butler Police Department or you may contact the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department. There is a $5 charge for vehicle VIN number inspections.

Donations
If you would like to make a direct donation to the Butler Police Department, send a check or money order to the Chief's attention at Butler Police Department, 201 North Broadway, Butler, IN 46721. Checks should be made payable to the Butler Police Department. Donations are used to purchase much-needed equipment and to provide the residents of Butler with programs that enhance their quality of life. 100% of your donation directly benefits the department and their equipment and program needs.

BUTLER NIGHT OUT

The Butler Police Department sponsors the annual "Butler Night Out" in the summertime. It is a fun event that has enjoyed a great amount of success. It is held every summer and is open to the public. Butler Night Out features free hot dogs, pop and chips; free face painting and balloons; games, prizes and lots of fun!
