Shop with a Cop

The Butler Police Department welcomes the opportunity to work with today's youth, particularly underprivileged children who may not have the same opportunities as others their age. Shop with a Cop is one way we reach out to these children and their families.

Through Shop with a Cop, children in need are able to purchase gifts for Christmas, including items for themselves, siblings and parents. The Butler Police Department strives to make the day engaging and exciting, starting off by picking children up in one of our police vehicles. Along with a parent or guardian, we take them to Walmart to select gift items. We end the shopping spree with dinner at a local restaurant with the children and their parents or guardian.

Each year, one to three families are chosen to participate in Shop with a Cop. If you are not chosen, you may re-apply next year.

  • Any child under age 17 is eligible to apply.
  • The child must be present on the shopping day in order to shop.
  • Eligible children must reside full-time within the City of Butler.
  • Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the shopping day.

  • Your application must be filled out completely and include a valid telephone number.
  • You must enclose a copy of a current utility bill to show proof of residency in Butler, Indiana.

  • Children and parent/guardians are picked up in a Butler police vehicle.
  • Accompanied by a Butler police officer, children are taken to Walmart for the shopping trip. They are given a budget for spending.
  • Children are encouraged to buy needed items for themselves, such as a coat, hat, gloves, or a sweatshirt or sweater, for example.
  • Children are also able to buy gifts for other family members.
  • We also let parents pick out some gifts for the children, so they will have some surprises on Christmas morning.
